Big move to the Big Easy

Three years ago as a sophomore at UT Austin, I had started to reconsider my life choices as a business major. Although I enjoyed the subject matter in finance, I found through my experience at internships and recruitment events that the lifestyle was not a good fit for me. I wanted to be placed in a work environment that challenges my thought processes on a daily basis. I hate routine. I was taking a leap of faith to say the least when I considered pursuing the medical field as a career path in the middle of my college career, and a bigger one to move to New Orleans for my master’s in pharmacology. However, since my arrival, I’ve found my stay in New Orleans more and more enjoyable. I’m glad to be a part of a program that supports a friendly and accommodating environment and I have been rewarded with very supportive teachers and close friends. I was excited at the prospect of taking classes with T2 students at Tulane School of Medicine and have thus invested all of my efforts to measure up to them. I realized quickly that I needed to change my rather lax study habits. With the help of study groups, I have found myself absorbing and retaining information in new ways. In the process I have confirmed my initial thoughts on my path towards pursuing a medical career, in that the life of a medical student can be as rewarding as it is stressful.

It’s been two months, and I feel like I’ve known this city forever. I’ve always thought of myself as a city boy, having lived in Dallas my whole life. I’ve garnered an appreciation for novelty stores in the French Quarter, jazz music on Frenchmen, and the Beignet’s at CafĂ© Du Mond. It is as the people here say, “a big small city”. At first, I was not able to wrap my head around this, mainly due to the antonyms in the description. I understand now the beauty of New Orleans is in its culture, the friendly people, the great food, and the agonizingly slow backroads.

I look forward to involving myself in community service opportunities in the near future and hope to make an impact in my stay here.

  1. This sounds eerily similar to blog by a specific person in high school who had a dog. Proud of you for changing ur lax studying habits. Studying on time is very beneficial and can reduce stress and anxiety.
